Cool vintage silver ring featuring a quote by French sculptor Auguste Rodin, the words "une vie à plein bord..." (A life that's full to the brim) engraved on the outside (and A. Rodin engraved inside). Rodin, generally considered the founder of modern sculpture, was a controversial figure in his day, with many of his most notable works slated by his contemporaries (artists and critics alike) as they clashed with predominant figurative sculpture traditions in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. Sticking firmly to his guns, and exploring the human body through a naturalistic lens (and critically rejecting the traditional themes of mythology and allegory), he eventually began to win over the artistic community (and indeed the State). By the late 19th century Rodin's position as the preeminent French sculptor of his time was set in stone (as it were) - with comparisons even made to the legendary Michelangelo. This ring dates from the 1960s... after his death in 1917, Rodin's popularity waned, but by the 1950s his reputation had re-ascended, and to this day he's considered a visionary and trailblazer, laying down foundations for much of the 20th century's artistic output.
